A practical overview of ethical, administrative, and strategic issues in managing a paralegal practice.

Ontario-licensed paralegals are required by the Law Society of Ontario (LSO) to complete 12 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in each calendar year in order to maintain their license in good standing.
These CPD requirements are broken down as follows:
Professionalism CPD (3 hours – must be accredited)
Substantive CPD (up to 9 hours)
All CPD hours must be completed by December 31 of each year.
Paralegals must report their completed CPD hours to the Law Society of Ontario by March 31 of the following year.

Yes. Ontario paralegals may complete their CPD using recorded or on-demand courses. Viewing archived webcasts, video replays, or other recorded CPD programs on your own qualifies as an eligible CPD activity under the Law Society of Ontario’s CPD requirements.
There is no annual limit on the number of CPD hours that can be claimed through recorded or on-demand learning formats, as long as the content is relevant to your professional practice.
Certificates of completion are issued once the course recording has been added to your account and the course has been marked as completed. Certificates include the course title, date, and duration, and are available for download directly from your dashboard.

Yes. LPEN’s Paralegal CPD courses are designed to meet the Law Society of Ontario’s CPD requirements for paralegals. While Substantive CPD hours do not require accreditation, Professionalism and EDI CPD hours must be accredited by the Law Society of Ontario.
LPEN ensures that all Professionalism and EDI courses offered to paralegals are provided as accredited programs.

This means you can complete your Ontario Paralegal CPD requirements by purchasing single courses, the Paralegal CPD Pass or by enrolling in the LPEN 2026 Membership, depending on how broad your training needs are.
