Quebec will make French mandatory for economic immigrants

Quebec Premier François Legault has moved forward with his plan to limit economic immigration to Quebec to those who already speak French. On May 25, Legault proposed changing Quebec’s immigration system to require all adult economic immigrants to prove they speak French. The province is also seeking feedback from Quebeckers and organizations on whether Quebec should limit annual immigration to 50,000 new permanent residents or gradually increase that immigration target to 60,000 new permanent residents for 2024 to 2027.
