Atlantic Immigration Program Processing Times Drop by 12 Months

east coast

As of June 8, 2026, IRCC has revised its processing time estimate for the Atlantic Immigration Program to 26 months for new applications, down from 38 months published on May 12. The 12-month reduction is the largest single-update improvement recorded for any permanent residence category in the June 2026 IRCC processing time update, and brings AIP processing to its lowest point since September 2025.

Context: How the Backlog Built

The improvement comes against the backdrop of a sharp deterioration in AIP processing that began in fall 2025. Times nearly tripled in a single month, rising from 13 months in September 2025 to 37 months in October 2025, a jump of approximately 185%. Processing has remained well above IRCC’s 11-month service standard since that point. As of June 8, 2026, approximately 12,900 AIP applications remained in IRCC’s inventory, indicating that while progress is being made, significant processing pressure remains.

Practitioner Considerations

The improvement is meaningful but the gap to the service standard remains substantial. At 26 months, AIP processing sits more than twice the 11-month target. Practitioners advising clients with active AIP files or those considering the pathway should bear several structural issues in mind.

AIP work permits are issued for up to two years and are non-renewable. Unlike many other PR program applicants, AIP applicants do not qualify for bridging open work permits. With processing currently estimated at 26 months, clients who enter Canada on an AIP work permit may face a period without maintained work authorization before a PR decision is issued. Status continuity planning is essential for in-Canada AIP applicants at or approaching the two-year mark on their work permits.

The AIP remains an employer-driven pathway available to skilled workers and international graduates with a job offer from a designated employer in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, or Newfoundland and Labrador. The provincial endorsement step is managed by the relevant province before a federal PR application is submitted to IRCC.

Processing time estimates reflect how long it took IRCC to process 80% of completed applications and represent forward-looking projections based on current inventory and resourcing. They are not guarantees and can shift between monthly updates.

Current processing times are available through the IRCC processing times tool at canada.ca.
